Tomorrow Hub’s Cultural Heritage Journey in Estonia: A Transformative Experience

The vibrant world of cultural heritage conservation came alive during an extraordinary Erasmus+ youth exchange project that brought together participants from eight European countries: Estonia, The Netherlands, Poland, Ireland, Malta, Romania, Portugal, and beyond. From September 18th to 27th, 2024, young people embarked on a remarkable journey of discovery, learning, and cultural connection in the heart of Estonia.

Project Objectives: More Than Just a Cultural Exchange

The project wasn’t just a typical youth exchange—it was a deep dive into the essence of cultural heritage. With three primary objectives, participants were challenged to:

1. Explore and identify the unique cultural characteristics, architectural styles, and traditions of their respective countries
2. Gain insight into the intricate world of conservators and restoration experts
3. Reflect on how cultural heritage shapes individual and collective identities

A Unique Approach to Learning

What set this project apart was its innovative, participant-driven methodology. Young people aged 17-25 were not just passive recipients of information but active contributors to the project’s design. Using collaborative tools like the MIRO idea board, participants were encouraged to:

• Contribute their own ideas
• Make collective decisions
• Develop valuable life skills
• Facilitate workshops and team-building activities

Exploring Estonia: Beyond the Typical Tourist Experience

The project took participants through two distinct locations:

• Tallinn’s historic Old Town (September 18-21 and 26)
• Türisalu’s serene natural landscape (September 21-25)

Participants experienced Estonia’s multifaceted culture, from its unique linguistic heritage (did you know Estonian is more closely related to Finnish and Hungarian than to other Baltic languages?) to its unpredictable weather that can showcase all four seasons in a single week!

Workshops and Activities: A Holistic Learning Experience

The project was packed with engaging activities designed to promote cultural understanding:

• City games exploring Tallinn’s neighborhoods
• Meetings with local conservators
• Exploring intangible cultural heritage
• Cooking meals together
• Cultural evenings and reflections
